So many movies to choose from...

Cannibal Holocaust, Serbian Film, Martyrs, Eraserhead, The Bunny Game... I love all of them, but "disturbing" - eh.

Audition by Takashi Miike, however...  that one got me.

As a child for me it was The shinning ( the twins in the hallway and the bathtub scene was particularly disturbing and stuck with me).... Also one scene in pet cemetery still sticks with me (the lady on the beds back ) .... I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Audition , that movie opened my eyes on a whole new level of being disturbed... Great movie on so many levels and highly disturbing .... I would also have to agree with Paranormal Activity,  though the sequels disappointed me and also have to throw in Event Horizon .... I have only seen that once but I remember it well  :o

For me the Living Dead and Evil Dead series. I think they had more impact at the time than modern movies do now.

From more recent years I think the Human Centipede movies have got to be the most disturbing.

I have always found that Pet Semetary was creepy. Especially when they flash back to the sister that was bed ridden. May be cheesy now, but it has always been a movie/book that made my skin crawl.

Definitely The Shining. Maybe its the "subliminal" stuff Kubrick puts in, or the Bear Suit, but there's something about the movie that is inherently creepy.

For me the most disturbing movie that I've ever seen was the Human Centipede...

Alternatively if we mean disturbing as in freaky...then i'd go with the Strangers

The most disturbing movie that I've ever seen would have to be the french movie INCENDIES. I would have to say the ending is totally disturbing... :-)

A Serbian film puts Human Centipede to shame. The most disgusting and one of the most disturbing as well(but more disgusting) is Melancholie der Angel. You have to see it to believe it

I agree. Eraserhead is just way out there. That thing/baby gave me nightmares when I first saw it as a kid. Even the making of the film is creepy.

From IMDB:
The mutant baby was apparently created from the embalmed fetus of a calf, although David Lynch has never confirmed this or described how he articulated it. During filming when he watched rushes, he even had the projectionist cover his eyes when takes with the baby were playing, so that no one would know how it was made. After completing the film, Lynch reportedly buried the "Embalmed Calf" in an undisclosed location. At the wrap party, they had a mock wake for it.

The film was created in a piecemeal fashion over 5 years, with many sets rebuilt after being torn down to make way for other work. Through all 5 years, Jack Nance's only request as far as comfort or entertainment went was "a room and a chair," and he kept his hair in the same frizzy style the whole time. The sparse, drawn-out shooting schedule is revealed when at one point, Henry opens a door, and Nance ages 18 months between cuts. 2 years in, cinematographer Herbert Cardwell, 35, died in his sleep. After 4 weeks of searching, Frederick Elmes was chosen to take his place.

...and you think that there's subliminal messages in The Shining:
Stanley Kubrick reportedly said the same; this was one of the films he made the cast and crew of The Shining watch to get in the right frame of mind for. Mel Brooks saw it and offered Lynch the chance to direct The Elephant Man; Lynch accepted. George Lucas asked Lynch to direct Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi; Lynch turned it down.

Finally, I think these last points sum it up beautifully (sorry to drag this out but meh)
The film's star, Jack Nance never knew, nor cared, exactly what Eraserhead meant. In an interview with the Twin Peaks fanzine Wrapped in Plastic, Nance said: "You guys get way too deep over this business. I don't take it all that seriously. It's only a movie."

David Lynch refuses to say anything about Eraserhead because he wants to let viewers decide for themselves what they think it means.

(still freaks me out even now)

I think I read in Fright or some other magazine that Lynch based the movie on things he experienced, I think he had a daughter who had something terribly wrong with her too...
The whole movie is a study in surreality...then some 8-)
My fave character was the lady in the radiator.....rofl :-@ ...how weird was that :-?

Thanks for the info. I can't begin to imagine how Lynch could have been influenced by personal experiences or even what they could have been. Sheez.

The lady in the radiator stuck with me also.

the following clip is PG & contains no gore or horror.
