Hey everyone, I decided to design a retro cover for the Marvel movies based on the old Key Video VHS cases and I need some advice.  Here is what I have so far:

The original vhs cases had a blue background behind all the photos and text.  I decided that I would tint the background to match the color of each hero from their respective movies.  Let me know what you think, or there are any tweeks you would like to see.  Thanks everyone.

love the new style, but agree on the rainbow, maybe let it run down the spine instead

I get the colored BG but a light toned, comic based background might be cooler, could tint it or not but then there would be no issues with colors vs titles and the whole set would match in that area.

Just to give you a idea of what I mean and not suggesting you use this.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!  I got rid of the rainbow stripes and added pictures on the back and an arc reactor logo on the side.  Here is the current result:

I got this version finished before I saw your advice ct.  I will look into doing a version using the marvel comic paper.  Thanks again for the advice everyone!

Quick new update.  I took your advice ct and blended a paper texture into the background color I wanted.  I really like the results:

Thanks ct.  This is why I like this forum, so many good people helping to make one a better cover creator.  I should have another updated version done tomorrow with the back more filled out.  Thank you everyone very much.

Looks much better with the paper texture. Have you tried to add that same (or similar) texture to blend with the white part at the back? Also, have you tried another color but the red borders around your images/stills?

Funny you mention the paper texture to the white area.  I just did that for my latest update.

As for the color around the images, I will look into using a different color.

Yep, that looks really good! If you are to keep the red background for the rest, may I suggest a golden color for the borders? I would like to suggest pink, but that would not be appropriate, lol

I like the update. The paper texture really does add a nice touch to the cover.

Latest update:

I think the gold outline works better for the Iron Man covers.  I would like to use different colors to represent the uniforms of each hero (Dark Red and Gold for Iron Man, Crimson and Grey for Thor, Blue and Red for Captain America, etc) which may be tricky with the Avengers movies.  Or should I just stick with one color for the entire series?  Let me know what you think.  Thanks again for all the wonderful help so far.

Yep, the gold works nicely if you keep the red. But I also like what you suggest below as well.

I like both ideas really, the trim colors can be adjusted to match each BG if you decide to go with different colors though.

I like this gold for this one with the red.

Like for Avengers you could use a color that is left over after you pick for the rest as it could be any color.

Thanks for the helpful advice everyone.  I decided to increase the size of the border around the front photo and the synopsis on the back.  Here is the result:

If everyone thinks this is ready, I will go ahead and post it.  In the meantime, here is the front of the next cover Incredible Hulk:

So far I like the green background with the blue outline (or perhaps purple for his original comic colors?)  I may replace the front picture with something else (screencap or something).  What do you think?

As for the colors on the Avengers covers, I had a thought: what if I use the colors from the villains as a basis (Dark Green and Gold or black for Loki, Dark Red and Black or silver for Ultron, Off purple and gold or blue for Thanos)?  Any ideas would help.

Increasing the size for the borders is a smart move as we see it better now.

As for Thor, it’s a good start. I like that front image. Keep at it and see where it leads you. Sorry I can't help you more as I'm more a visual kind of person.
