This was actually one of the better films I have seen this year, if you like mafia movies you will like it.

Surprisingly this is one of Travolta's better roles, he was kind of built to play the gangster type, yet he has disappointed me a lot in recent years, well since Swordfish which was one of his best films actually, this while still not on par with that one was a decent watch none the less.

I would agree totally with you. I loved it when he went all bad guy in Broken Arrow & then again in Face off. He is built to play the gangster. I did like Gotti as well.
Well atleast I think that was a good movie.

I was gonna read up on this flick before I were to spend 2 hours watching it and this is what I found on Ebert's site.

"The first 45 minutes of the amateurish based-on-a-true-story "Speed Kills" are pretty rough. Some preliminary scenes are supposed to be disorienting, but many of the movie's creative decisions barely make sense: there are abrupt smash-cut edits, poorly choreographed and photographed motorboat racing scenes, and voiceover narration that rushes viewers through key plot points. I had to rewind a handful of key scenes—which set up reluctantly mobbed-up motorboat racer and designer Ben Aronoff (John Travolta) as the Henry Hill of Miami—just to confirm that they are as tepid and un-involving as they initially appeared. The film's Gerber-bland back half is plenty bad, but the first half of "Speed Kills" features some of the year's worst film making".

Well I guess that decided it for me.

Ebert's a fool. I would basically do the opposite of anything he says.

Critics generally all fall in the same category, they like art house films, biographies, historical pictures or Academy Award type contenders, outside of that it's hit and miss with little rhyme or reason as to why they might dislike a title from critic to critic.

For example they will give high marks to a art house film where it's really out there and very hard to follow because they consider that high level cinema, with symbolism and visuals in place of dialog.

Yet when a non-art house film uses similar filming techniques, they attack and say it's poorly done like the above, notice the reference here "amateurish based-on-a-true-story " see if if it's not a full on biography they cry foul, if it were a actual bio-pic and boring as hell, it would be all the rave.

Take this "abrupt smash-cut edits" don't even know what that means, it's just a made up phrase to hammer home the "I hate this film" part that they can't really say like that or the won't appear "criticy" enough (jerks), hell I've seen films that made me dizzy for no reason, where the camera work was handheld and sucked yet the critics raved about the groundbreaking cinematography.

For these reasons I never read critic reviews unless I know it's a "type" of film they will favor, then you can kind of count on them for insight but if it's a normal everyday film you never know what you will get from them.

I used to watch Siskel & Ebert almost from the time they started their program and in my opinion, most of the time they were right on the money. Of course there were exceptions, but I could count on their reviews and they steered me away from a lot bad movies.

I guess it's a preference, I rather watched their half hour program, than throw out $20 and waste 2 hours of my time.

I still read movie reviews but I don't value their opinion as much as what those two had to say. :)

Haha that just means you happen to like the same things they did not that they were fair or objective in their reviews...

;)

Critics if they do their job should make a fair assessment of a film for what it is, not necessarily what they think of it personally, now days it's become fashionable to express opinions based on personal tastes rather than objective evaluation.

Kind of like the news pundit's of today, who tell us "what to think" and then draw conclusions as well as making rampant generally erroneous speculations to support their "views", rather than just reporting the facts as they actually are...

I disagreed with some of their reviews, the first Batman movie comes to mind for example and there were others, but they also liked Seven and Terminator and so on, so I can't say I just happen to like what they liked, I also like how they broke down a movie.

Well to be perfectly honest, in my humble opinion, of course without offending anyone who thinks differently from my point of view, but also by looking into this matter in a different perspective and without condemning of one's view's and by trying to make it objectified, and by considering each and every one's valid opinion, I honestly believe that I completely forgot what I was going to say. :D
