first update for the back:

so i have started with the first F and kept it mainly image based as i feel i will probably go more text based on the second one for legals and synopsis etc. i also darkened the image on the front to closer match the back. one thing i am not happy with at the moment though is i would ideally like to have the tagline type thing fully justified but not quite cracked it yet.

let me know what you think.  :D

EDIT: is it just me or are the headlight beams angled down a little too much? :-?

Headlights do angle down some so they light the road but not sure how much would be too much lol.

The easy way you do the tagline is:

1. Create a text box and add the text to it.
2. Justify the text as you like.
3. Convert it to a smart object.
4. Fit the smart object to the space as needed.

This way it remains editable for future covers.

that is a good point, they would point at the road a little, hmmm not sure then.

the text i was more meaning trying to get the text the right size to be able to fully justify it so it holds the shape of the box. i used the pen tool to make the text box so that it was the right shape but i am struggling to get the text to fill it fully without massive spaces.

That impossible to do with large text in a small space.

To do what you suggest would require the characters be much smaller than would be appropriate for a tagline I think.

i thought i might possibly have to add/alter words in order to get it to work but dont know if that would be wrong as is it wouldnt be the exact wording from the film or if it would be alright as it isnt necessarily the actual movie tagline so is kind of made up anyway.

You could do that, but if you change the text film to film that might be a problem down the road ie a pain to try and come up with something that fits for each one...

totally, i didnt think that. i guess thats the problem of text conversations, the intended meaning is lost a little. it was a very good point (that i hadnt thought of).

Back update:

i have added the synopsis credits and ratings to the second F with an image behind it (not 100% convinced on the image) to make the text more legible. i also skewed the ratings on the back to fit the shape (it may not be the norm but i quite like it). Added the spine logos too while i was at it.

I don't like the image.

I'd leave that "F" with just the texture as it has so much going on in there a image of any kind will just be a distraction and not add anything to the design.

i just felt that because of the black in the images in the first F i needed something with a bit of black for the second, i was trying to get something that would tie in with the film but be as minimal as possible to not distract.

here is the cover without the image:

i think the second F is a bit Bright/green without something. what do you think?

EDIT: maybe the issue is not with the second F but the first, maybe i should change the images. something to think about i guess.

i have lessened the amount of black in the first F, i think it looks a little better.

EDIT: thanks to things i have learnt here that fix was surprisingly easy, picture updated.

I'd like to see it all in white, that gradient is not really working for me.

I'm not too keen on the spine title being different from the main title either.

I'm also not a fan of the rating on the spine, I know they do that on region B covers but that does not make me like it any better, at the very least you could make it smaller, right now it kind of dominates the spine, same is true of the back rating it's quite large.

Maybe work on fitting the synopsis in one section?

Possibly bring back the tagline in a better way?

I think a thinner font weight could work better for the synopsis, everything on the back is very bold (apart from the credits) whereas on the front you have the thinner weight for the actor/actresses first names.

Thinner font gets lost in the texture...

I took the current one I used down one point just to see how small I could go and it faded right in, looked terrible.

Had to add some dark shading to the left half of the example to make it contrast even at this size...

sorry for the delay, i was testing out a few things, took a little longer than i thought, but i can go through that later once i have corrected some of the other things.

i can understand not liking the region B ratings but that is more for me, i will have it on my version otherwise it just wouldnt be right.  :D  i have removed for the WIP though. i have changed the side TT to match the front and i quite liked the tagline layout you had there and added that (althought i kept the gradient for it  :-W ) i can remove the gradient if you think it would look better but i wasnt massively keen on the back text being the only whit text, i thought that might be incorrect.

sauron wrote:I think a thinner font weight could work better for the synopsis, everything on the back is very bold (apart from the credits) whereas on the front you have the thinner weight for the actor/actresses first names.

like CT said just before me it gets lost with the textured background if i make it any smaller or thinner, i did look at trying to have something similar to the actor section on the back but couldnt work something out, i was going to do the tagline in the same style but it didnt look great so ended up removing it.

anyway... as i was saying i have altered a few things and removed some others, i think i like this better but obviously im not too sure as it is so far away from what is usually on the typical cover nut see what you think and let me know.

thanks for everyones input so far, it is greatly appreciated.

I think in this case all white would be ok, what you have there looks much better than before, so if you like it then I have no issue with it.

it just seems a bit weird having no synopsis or credits and legals. maybe that is what drew me to the steelbook though.

thanks but i am not sure if i am done yet though. i am currently playing around with a spanning spine design, its been a long time since i have done one and i dont really know what the general rules are about that as far as image and TT goes.

this is a rough go at it (just ignore the ratings):
