The fast and the furious

Postby Nickaberdeen » Jul Tue 10, 2018 10:28 pm

so i figured it was about time i did one of these. go easy on me, its my first time.  ;)

a while back i decided i wanted to remake covers for the fast and furious set as i love these films and wanted to do something better than the ones i previously had. i did a lot of research into these and even though i am quite disappointed at the amount of decent resources i can locate for something i thought would be overloaded with options i came across the italian steelbook set which i took a bit of a shining to.

if the spines werent so awful i would have probably bought them, but since they did i was hoping i could recreate something similar but hopefully better. anyway... i started them a while ago but wasnt liking how it was turning out so left it for a while and am just now going back to it. i have pretty much written off 90% of what i had previously done and decided to start agin. i was hoping that some of the artists on here would be able to help me out and contemplate things i wouldnt have even thought of as i would really like to make this one of my best looking sets.

enough talking, lets get to it.

i have started on the front, not sure i am 100% happy with the metal effect but hopefully i can get a few pointers on that as i have never really been able to get the metal look quite right and i know the carbon fibre type effect is a little different but hopefully will get closer to the right look as i go.

all input will be happily received.  :D

Looks like a modified version of Gotham Ultra Italic.

Should be easy enough to take the font and alter each character to match or you could just use them as is.

okay so here is the latest update:

i think the Gotham font looks pretty good for the numbers (thanks CT), i edited it a little and i imagine the other numbers will be a little harder to edit than the number 1 but thats a problem for another day.  ;)

i spent a little bit of time doing the title and it is a little bit custom but i think that is okay. i havent done the metal effect yet so the outlines and text will change in colour later.

it looks a little funny without the car image on the front but i think that will be the next port of call for this.

let me know what you guys think and if there are parts you think i can improve. thanks for looking

i will definitely check this out before doing the next one. and even though i havent watched it yet im pretty confident its nothing like how i edited the 1, lol. i rasterised it and treated it like an image as opposed to text, but am looking forward to learning something new.

Yeah this shows you how to convert it to a path then edit that, then convert the resulting path into a shape, to maintain the scale-able vector aspect of it.

Might note once the new shape is created from the edited path, it's still editable using the same process.

not too sure how frequently i should post updates so i am going with lots  :D

i figure see each step individually might be more helpful to people starting out. anyway...her is the next update. i have added the car to the front (i havent done much to it yet, just changed the levels on it and overlayed it). i also masked out the bottom of the number.

thanks chou, will go with lots then.

just working on little touches to the car now. i have added a green tint to the car and darkened the metal in the rim and spoiler and a little light on the headlights, just away to try and do the light streams:

Looking good so far, intrigued to see how you will work on the back.

I personally think the green lights don't work, would be best to have them the usual colour.

honestly, i have no idea what im going to do with the back (or any of it if im being completely honest), at the moment i am just trying to replicate the orignal, then i will look at adding/altering parts.

the original steelbooks had the lights colour themed to the cars so am just trying to get it the same first then i will try them in white? like you suggest. thanks

You can use light flares like this for the headlights.

i was thinking it was kind of like those belts you used to get that had like pyramids (metal effect) but i couldnt really figure how to search for that. will give these carbon fibers a go. it doesnt have to be the exact texture anyway just something that looks awesome will be perfect, will go check these out now. thanks :D
