Lionsgate Retro VHS

Postby stardragon9 » Jan Tue 23, 2018 5:17 pm

Hello everyone,

I am looking for some assistance with creating a retro vhs style cover for releases from Lionsgate home video.  I have an idea in mind, based upon the look of the old Thorn EMI vhs cases.

Here is what the Thorn EMI vhs covers looked like:

And here is what I have come up with so far:

I like the way the spine and back look, but I am not sure about the large logo on the front.  I also don't know if I would like to use the tagline for the movie or a review quote on the front cover (Thorn cases went back and forth).  I am leaving the back blank for right now, until I can nail down the design look.  Let me know what you think.  I'll of course post updates after I get feedback.

That will be quite the challenge, good luck! Personally, I would not keep the large logo on the front but let's see what others have to say.

Thanks for the response chouette!  Yes it will be a challenge, but I hope the results are worth it.  I added a few photos on the back to help give a sense of what the spacing will look like when done.  I also have done two versions: one with a smaller Lionsgate logo on the front and one without the logo.  Let me know which one you like better.

Version 1 (smaller logo):

Version 2 (no logo):

As for the tagline on the front, I am still working on getting it to look like the logo.  I may just use a different font altogether.  After looking at the progress, I may add outlines on the photos to give them a cleaner look.

Definitely the smaller logo if you want it but I like without best.

Agree with everyone, no logo. That logo at the back seems too big also, but maybe you have a plan in your head to keep it this size. Let's see what your update will be.

Okay, thanks for the feedback everyone.  I will leave the logo off the front of the cover.  As for the suggestion on the back logo chouette, I will mess around with it a little to see if I can get it to fit better.  I should have an updated cover within the next few days (I hope).  ;)

Okay everyone, here is an updated version of the cover.  I shrunk the size of the logo on the back of the cover and went ahead and made small outlines around the pictures (just enough to make them a little more uniform).  The Lionsgate logo on the front is now completely gone.  I also went ahead and filled in some more of the credits (I tried to hit the main ones (music, producers, writers, director, etc) and the warning info at the bottom.  I fell like I am getting closer to finishing this template, but I don't know that I am completely satisfied with the font on the year and running time.  If anyone has any suggestions for a font, let me know.  Anyways enough of my yapping, here is the next stage on the cover:

I want to thank you all for your suggestions on this cover, I greatly appreciate it!   ;)  :-$
Edit: I just noticed the spelling error on 'Selling'!  That will be fixed on the final cover, I promise.   :-=

Nice, coming along very well. The thing that my eyes saw right away is that your middle image at the back is too dark compared to the other 2. I wish I could help you with the fonts, but that's one thing I still struggle with when making covers. Besides that, I like your updates!

I took another look at the cover and realized that you were right about the center photo.  I wanted to get the iconic salute Katniss gave during the games but it just looks a little off compared to the other photos.  I tried to adjust the picture to match the others but it didn't work.  I also realized that I didn't use any pictures of poor Peeta on the back!  Here is an update (I think that I have finally come to terms with the tech info on the back):

So what does everyone think?  Is it ready to post?  Or is there any other part that I can work on to make it better?  Thanks again for all the helpful advice that I have received.  :)

The center still could use some work. It looks washed out compared to the others. Adding a bit of contrast might help.

The reason the picture looks a little washed out is the fact that it is from the scene where Peeta is standing in the rain, throwing the burnt bread to the hogs.  I tried messing with the contrast a bit and it makes the picture look worse.  I will keep looking for other pictures.  I may get rid of the third picture and use one from the games with the two main characters instead.  I'll post the results when I get the chance.  Thanks for the advice!  ;)

I think that I found a better image of Peeta during the games.  I also dialed back the brightness and contrast of the other back photo to see if that would help.  I also filled out a little more of the crew information at the top and moved the credits and movie logo down a little to see if that would help take up a little bit more of the 'blank space' on the back.  (I know that no one said anything about it but it was bothering me just a little).  I also decided to move the photos up just a little from the bottom to help with the same issue.  Let me know what you think:

I love the new image updates, works better. One last thing (I promise, lol). Can everything under your 3 back images be moved up a little bit. It seems to close to the bottom compared to the space under your images. Other than that, I really like this cover!

Thanks.  Does this work a little better?

If so, I'll post it and get to work on the other movies in the series.  ;)

Thanks.  I have posted the cover for the first Hunger Games movie.  I will start working on the covers for the other movies in the series ASAP.  I am going to make this particular retro series an exclusive to this site as my way of saying thanks for all the help.   :D  ;)

I will also start a thread in the 'Showcase' area once I get rolling on these covers.

Okay quick question, I am working my way through the cover for the second Hunger Games movie and have an idea but I want to know what everyone thinks.  I want to use the banner photo which displays all the tributes on the back instead of movie photos but should I use stills in order to keep the covers similar?  Here is an example with the banner (don't mind the cast info or synopsis, I haven't retyped them yet):

What do you think?  Or should I just do both so everyone has options?   :-?

Sorry that I have been so long getting back to this project.  I have decided to keep the banner on the back of 'Catching Fire'.  I discovered that I liked several of the posters for this movie however so there are a few different versions.  Here are the samples:

Version 1 (Bird logo):

Version 2 (IMAX poster):

Version 3 (Awesome black and white artwork):

Thanks for all your help finalizing the template for this set.  I will be posting the rest of the Hunger Games covers in my 'Lionsgate Retro' thread over in the showcase.  ;)
