The Strain (2014-) Season 4
EFX Rating40 stars

I really can't put my finger on why I like this series so much, but it grabbed me right at the start & it's not let me down at all. It's just paced well, has many parallel stories that all weave together well & keeps you involved. The characters are well defined & developed & the cast is great. You love to hate the bad ones & like the good ones.

Rewatched Ruby Sparks, one of my dvds.

EFX Rating40 stars

Side note to those who don't know:

The movie is diretced by the couple who made Little Miss Sunshine and was written by the lead actress, Zoe Kazan.

Also Paul Dano plays the male lead who is in real life a couple with Zoe who, she, herlsef plays the titular character Ruby.
A fabulous movie. To show that I don't love only art films and what not. A film for all the romantics in the house or all who wan't to laugh and be entertained...But this is great entertainment.

Watched the two-part miniseries "The State" which aired on National Geographic. Very disturbing to say the least.

The Wizard of Lies (2017)

Postby ctaulbee » Sep Wed 27, 2017 10:36 pm

The Wizard of Lies (2017)

Adaptation of journalist Diana B. Henriques' account of financier Bernie Madoff's orchestration of one of the largest frauds in U.S. history that led to financial ruin for thousands of investors and, in the process, his own family's destruction.

If you want a thorough history lesson about this horrendous scandal, The Wizard of Lies is for you. If you want to see Robert DeNiro at the top of his craft... this is for you. If you rejoice in a fine script, brilliant direction... this is for you. If you love Michelle Pfeiffer... this is for you because she steals the show as Madoff's wife, Ruth, and is a remarkable lookalike.

I rather enjoyed it but it might not be everyone's cup-o-tea

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

EFX Rating40 stars

I was a bit skeptical about the casting of Peter Parker, but after seeing the movie I'm sold. The movie fits right in with the MCU, good story line, much better than the Amazing Spider-man flicks, it ranks up there with the original Tobey Maguire films. Two thumbs up.

Better than Luke Cage, not as good a DareDevil. A bit too tortured & hand wringy for me, but the action was decent & I liked the overall story.

Salvation (2017-) Season 1
EFX Rating40 stars

Just finished this season. It's one of the few series of late that I haven't fallen asleep during at least one episode. It has its goofy moments & the science isn't always rigorous, but it's well paced, the characters are well defined & the story is good. I haven't seen any indication they are planning or filming a second season, so the ending to this one will be a bit of a let-down, if they don't continue, but it was worth watching.

Tin Star (2017-) TV Series Season 1
EFX Rating35 stars

Just finished season 1. My wife liked it. She's ready for a season 2. I didn't like it that much, but she's always been a Tim Roth fan, so that probably explains it. The title will lead some to assume it's a western. It's not. It's a drama/thriller, maybe. I found it to be a bit too introspective, melodramatic & dysfunctional for my taste, but I did watch it all the way through & it did keep my attention, though that's mainly because I had to struggle to get what they were saying, given all the British, Irish & Nordic accents. The ending was certainly a cliff-hanger, though I don't feel compelled to see how it turns out. It just didn't grab me that much, but, as I said, my wife wants to see it continue, so I guess I'll be seeing more of it.

War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
EFX Rating40 stars

Very impressive movie told almost exclusively from the point of view of the apes. Loved it from start to finish, well phased movie with a great score that plays a major role in the story telling, beautifully shot and the editing is just seamless, a great emotional ride that will grip your heart and it's also a bad ass action film. Highly recommend it.

Wind River (2017)
Chilling thriller that follows a rookie FBI agent (Elizabeth Olsen) who teams up with Cory (Jeremy Renner) a local game tracker with deep community ties and a haunted past, to investigate the murder of a local girl on a remote Native American Reservation in the hopes of solving her mysterious death.

Written and directed by Taylor Sheridan, also stars Gil Birmingham, Jon Bernthal, Julia Jones, Kelsey Asbille, and James Jordan.
Rated R for strong violence, a rape, disturbing images, and language

Despite having the same shortcomings as Sicario and Hell or High Water and then some, it is worth a viewing even if the scripting is pure B-movie dribble. The movie has more dramatic heft and more to say about the state of the world than your average B-movie does, thanks to its strong performances and politically-charged storyline. This isn’t a must-see for cinemaphiles the way that Sheridan’s previous efforts were but it’s certainly worth checking out for those who enjoyed his previous crime-thrillers.

Victor Frankenstein (2015) 5/10 wasn't the greatest or the worst Frankenstein movie. the whole idea was to center around Victor Frankenstein himself and not his Monster.

Atomic Blonde (2017)

Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron) is an MI6 agent sent to Berlin to recover a lost list of secret agents. But with the Cold War coming to an end, both sides want the list so they can control the post-conflict future.

This is a non stop action flick from start to finish, it's one bad ass fight scene after another, the story line
is pretty strong and Charlize Theron's relentless energy drives the movie, the early '80s music score fits the mood of the movie well. Enjoyed every second of it

War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
EFX Rating30 stars

Finally got around to trying this one out. The CGI was OK. Story & general action was so-so. It just didn't grab me. It was the same for my wife. We watched it all the way through & our reaction was just... meh. It wasn't 'bad', it just didn't ring any chimes. I nodded of 4 or 5 times for a minute or so at a time. It just didn't have enough of something, I can't put my finger on it, but it just fell short. I know others liked it, so it's probably just me.

Fargo (2016 -) TV Series Season 3
EFX Rating35 stars

Just finished season 3. It was pretty weird. They got a little mystical, but I won't spoil it. I still love the accents & the way they speak. It does stay pretty true to the way the Coen brothers did the original film. There are times when I'm watching Ewan McGregor & he's as close to William H. Macy as you can get. It's quite fascinating. It took me several minutes to recognize Ewan, at the beginning, with the way they've made him up. Again, I don't want to spoil it. It's worth watching. I just hope the next season will continue & not slide into total insanity. This one went about as far in that direction as I can handle.
