Is this an American thing?

hi everyone. i have to ask, i have noticed a couple of times now with the competitions that "SiFi" is the genre. is this an American thing like "color"? i was always under the impression it was Sci-Fi so just wondered if it was American. just curious. thanks

SyFy is an American cable channel that plays Sci-fi works. I believe that it has just become accepted in the USA that both mean the same. However, Sci-fi is the correct form.
