I tend to follow the same line of thinking as Curt.  I do think that both the Citizen Kane and Pulp Fiction trailers you posted are great.  They both sell their respective films without giving too much away and are entertaining to watch at the same time.  The Shining Trailer though as you figured is not doing its job.  Just a bunch of names and a lot of blood does not sell a movie to me.

Reading these posts, I have to say that I see Alien's point. His interest lies purely in the entertainment value, not in the intended objective of selling something. Some trailers are just imagery that some find fascinating or engaging, without any other purpose. They don't entice us to see the film & don't inspire us to go buy a ticket or even a DVD, but may stick in our minds for days, months or even years, though we may never recall what film they were attached to. A lot of Super Bowl commercials are like this. They have great visual or story impact, but later, when asked, viewers have no idea what product was being pushed. Those are simply artistic expressions, for their own sake. It's a waste, from a business perspective, but for those who simply seek entertainment, they're hugely successful. For the audience, there's nothing wrong with that, at all. For the product seller, it's a failure.

I only watch trailers if I'm already interested in the film, but not often. Most of the time, I find that the only good thing about the film is encapsulated in the trailer, on poorly done films. Watching the film, regarding such, is almost invariably a letdown. In fact, I usually only watch a trailer when I see a comment, like a recent one of Vince's, that says the trailer changed his mind about seeing a film. In that case, I may go back & watch the trailer, but there's always that nagging suspicion, in the back of my mind, that if the trailer is good, but the cast & synopsis don't inspire me, I'll probably see all that's worth seeing in the trailer itself.

I hadn't seen this post and here Fog captures exactly why in my view trailers can be viewed as an art form onto themselves. Forget the movie they're selling. A trailer is a mini movie on it's own and if you are enthralled and enticed by that piece of work then it's great!

Wow. I've never even heard about this movie but the trailer just makes me want to see it right now....the music, the angles, the choreography. brilliant trailer. Dunno if the film is good or not but the trailer is amazing.

What dop you guys think about this one. Instead of shoving my favorites I'll just ask your opinion without giving mine.

please don't mind if the film is animated or if the film is not a genre win which you like. just focus on the trailer.

So, Whaddya think of the trailer?

I like both trailers but like I said. take a look at the french trailer , which is not a major production:

It's enticing. You don't really know all about the film and what the hell is going on. You probably think. Ok, She had an affair, a great love with this guy and she lost him. Maybe he died. What happened to him? Then she suddenly marries another dude but spends the rest of her life lamenting that love?

But is it really that way? I like that it doesn't just shove you the movie in your face.

Now for The House, this is a major Holywood production and while It might be a very funny film it shows you basically what happens in the whole movie. It shows you the whole plot. Ok, since it's a comedy it's not showing you all the jokes and one might even argue that, why does a comedy need a great plot? It's sufficient enough to make you laugh and I agree. I think if a comedy is the most stupid thing ever made but makes you laugh like a mad man then it is a great comedy. For example I love "Freddy got Fingered". Now this is a stupid, horrible movie...but I love it. it just makes me laugh so hard..so as a comedy it's great!

I like Farrel actually. I mean Ron Burgundy? is there a greater comedic character?
