Slipcases

Postby alienmem » Apr Fri 14, 2017 3:38 pm

I've been thinking and i think a lot....but i can't get past the idea of the existence of slipcases....

What are they for?

I just throw them away...

Why do they exist if they have the same exact art as the inside cover?

Makes no SENSE!!! No SENSE!!!

Some like them as they act as a protector more or less like a dust-sleeve on a book.

Generally the backs are different, the slip back is often more "ad" driven and the inside back is usually more "specs" driven but of course there are exceptions.

Ok. the backs may differ slightly as you say.

But the dust thing just doesn't wrap around my brain. Why:

Dvds and Blu rays are usually stored vertically by the customers on their shelves side by side to one another
which makes the dust think obsolete in this case, since slipcases only cover the horizontal areas. This is, The top of the bluray or dvd(and the bottom, but the bottom is irrelevant) will still be affected by the dust.

I still see no point if they are exactly(up to slight alterations) the exact same artwork.

I sincerely just throw them away. I keep some that are cool and replace the inside art.

Most of the slip cases I've gotten on DVDs (I don't generally buy BluRays) are embossed & glossy. I always figured they were just an additional way for the distributors to jazz up the covers with the 3D type embossing & glossy feel. Also, as CT pointed out, they tend to have more ad oriented stuff on the backs, so it just provides more landscape for advertising that won't fit on the regular cover. They already cram so much junk on the covers it's ridiculous. Anyway, I never really gave it any more thought than that. I agree that it's unlikely dust protection is much of a factor, but I do know that my case get scuffed over time, being pulled out of ever tightening shelf space & crammed back in, so I can imagine really serious collectors might like the additional protection, though if they're that anal about it, they probably put the whole thing in a plastic bag, the way avid comic collectors do & only handle them wearing white gloves.
