He's not a big enough bankable star name little owl, they have been pretty clever at casting a-list names in the last several films, that's not a accident.

The Rock aka Dwayne Johnson was a huge plus for the series and brought more money to the bank than Paul ever did, many tuned in just to see the stand-off between him and Vin.

Then they added Jason Statham and Kurt Russell who are both back for a second run and the real supporting cast Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster although with Paul gone I'm not sure Jordana has any real place left.

Then there is the newcomers Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren both with bankable records, the producers know what sells and how to give it to the masses.

Love them or hate them matters not, they will continue to crank them out as long as they hit huge box office numbers and they do that with ease.

The last film dominated the box office raking in over 1.5 Billion USD, few films not even the big Marvel blockbusters can't put up numbers like that consistently Avengers Ultron managed 1.4B but still lagged behind.

You simply cannot argue with success like that.

I've been wondering why Vin hasn't run out another Riddick or xXx film yet. He was always the real mainstay in these films & adding the big names, as Curt pointed out, is nothing but good & better box office.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage is playing now has made 338M so far at the box not bad for a 85M budget.

The 3rd and possibly last Riddick film failed to make big bank because they broke all the rules that made the first two so successful, it only made 100M but the budget was slightly under 40M still not a actual loss.

His Last Witch Hunter film made 150M on a 90M budget, so even his failures make money lol.

I've been waiting for that Return of Xander one, but I figured he'd be doing more, as they did seem to have a loyal following. I guess it's just too soon.

Ok, Ok, I agree, you can't argue with box office returns and merchandising profits and that I was too harsh with the comment that only one or two of the films were fine. Also that I was way too harsh/ignorant to compare this franchise to Police Academy. Seriously there's nothing comparable between them.
   

I know the original plan was to continue with the franchise but that the ending of the 7 was changed. Director James Wan even stated:

The original ending of Furious 7 was setting up, you know, the bigger world of where the Fast and Furious franchise could go into. And that’s obviously very smart of them to think so. But when the tragedy happened, all of that became irrelevant. So it did not matter anymore, all of that stuff. And to the studio’s credit, they did not push for that. They realized how important it was to make a movie that finishes and that just outright is a tribute to Paul Walker. So I give them a lot of credit for being bigger than that and going along with this ending that is the right ending to go with.

But my comment about Paul Walker was not to be taken as an endorsement (or criticism) of the actor ( I even own Vehicle 19 and Eight Below - no need for Google   ) but that I thought that the story arcs of the franchise had been addressed and could have ended with the way the story ended in 7 and as such would have ended the franchise at its peak.

So lets see where this new movie takes the franchise and see how they keep the story new.

I was just pointing out that he was not the reason for the series success, only real Walker fans would be silly enough to think that anyway lol.

I mean seriously who kills a hot franchise due to a second string player exit (for any reason) that would in my opinion be stupid.

More less like pulling the plug on Harry Potter after two films because Richard Harris passed away, while it's true Dumbledore was a key character he was not irreplaceable.

The good thing about Paul Walkers character in FF is it's not been needed since the first film.

I mean once the cat was out of the bag he was a cop, what was his real role... other than Dom's side-kick lol.

Monday April 4, 2017 Weekend Update:

The Fate of the Furious had a very respectable domestic opening at $98.78 million.

However, it's international performance actually improved it's position on the all time opening weekend chart as the film brought in a record setting $433.2 million from 63 international markets for a record breaking $532 million global box office debut.

Guess the Furious fans did not miss Paul Walker all that much after all... lmao.

Update Apr. 23 - The top of this weekend's box office looks a lot like last weekend as the top  grossing film remains unchanged, The Fate of the Furious dominates all newcomers as it closes in on $1 billion worldwide.

For a 10 day run that's a lot of money.

New update 1.215 Billion dollars only Beauty and the Beast has made more money in 2017 it has pulled in 1.222 Billion but that is a tiny lead and may not hold as the weeks tick-on...

Guardians of the Gallaxy Vol 2 is galloping onto the scene now at 740 Million, so we will see what the coming weeks hold for it.

Anyone doubt there will be a Fast & Furious Nine?

One last update on this as I know 2getted will be dying to know... lol.

BATB has held on to it's little lead for top grossing film of 2017 thru June now.

Guardians stalled after that impressive start and has only managed to increase it's gross by 100 million in June but it's weekly gross is now under 5M a week so it will not be a contender for 2017.

Wonder Woman after just four weeks in release has skidded to a halt, it might hit 850M by end of run but I doubt it the numbers are falling by half every week since it's release.
